Free Mountain Biking Beginners' Sessions At Carbisdale

13 March 2008  |
Ever thought about trying out mountain biking but been too nervous of being caught up in the middle of a speeding convoy of more experienced bikers? Forestry Commission Scotland is offering newcomers and novices the chance to take part in one of three free taster sessions at Carbisdale. The events are 20 March - event for kids (no under 10's) 14 June - ladies only event for newcomers to mtb - (macho free trail provided!) 21 June - family event All the sessions will run from 10.00am until noon and will be led by qualified MTB leaders. Places on each course are limited so booking in advance is essential. Bikes and helmets will be available for hire if you don't have your own so all you'll need to bring are some basic cycling skills - and appropriate outdoor clothing. Malcolm MacDougall, Forestry Commission Scotland in Dornoch, said: "The Commission has built up an enviable reputation for the high quality and accessibility of its mountain biking facilities and our Sutherland trails are no exception! "We have unmarked forest trails for a more gentle family outing as well as some technical trails for the more daring – or the youngsters who want to show up mum and dad. "This is a great opportunity for people to get out into the forests and get involved in some great fun. "Come along and try out the Carbisdale trails - once you've experienced the thrill of mountain biking, you'll know why so many people get hooked on the sport." To book a place on the sessions or for more information about the events or the trails at Carbisdale, phone the Dornoch District office on 01862 810359 or visit www.forestry.gov.uk/mtbscotland for more information. How to get there: The Kyle of Sutherland trails (Balblair and Carbisdale) lie about 10 miles west of where the A9 crosses the Dornoch Firth on the Dornoch Bridge. The Carbisdale trails are on the west side of the Kyle, about 7km from Ardgay and close to Culrain station. Follow signs for Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel from Ardgay. The road follows the side of the River Oykel, leading to Culrain. At Culrain, carry straight on past the station before joining the road up to the youth hostel, on the left. The car park and trail head is about 200m along this road on the left hand side. www.forestry.gov.uk/mtbscotland
